Japanese animation is often called anime for short. Watching these shows is becoming increasingly popular among tweens and teens. However, before you let your child start watching anime online, it's important to check out the level of violence and adult themes in the various anime series.



Sailor Moon Crystal

This show is available through show anime online. It features teenaged girls with powers that help them fight an evil presence trying to get control over a powerful crystal. Although the characters wear skimpy clothing and are very thin, they are relatively streaming good role models in general as they're examples of girls fighting for what's right.



Cowboy Beebop

Another popular show is Cowboy Bebop. It's best for older teens rather than tweens, however, because there's some mature content as well as smoking, drinking, swearing and violence. It's a story about a group of bounty hunters that takes place in space, but also includes some elements of westerns and science fiction. It's well known for having a particularly good soundtrack and well-developed characters.



Death Note

As with Cowboy Beebop, Death Note is a favorite anime show among older teens and adults. Because the main character is a serial killer that targets criminals, it isn't suitable for younger viewers due to a large amount of violence, although most of the deaths aren't depicted with a lot of blood. It brings up a lot of moral questions but includes a lot of bad language and the main character doesn't treat women well at all.



Fullmetal Alchemist

Those looking for a more complicated series that are okay with a relatively high amount of violence may want to check out Fullmetal Alchemist. Other than the violence, the content isn't too bad, as there isn't a lot of swearing, drinking or sex in the show. It's definitely better for older teens than younger tweens.



Avatar: The Last Airbender

People looking for Japanese animation for younger tweens may enjoy Avatar: The Last Airbender. This is a bit of a martial arts fantasy show that has a lot of positive role models and messages. It doesn't have the sex, swearing and the huge amount of violence some of the other series are known for. Although this story was made into a live action movie, many people prefer the original animated series. There are good role models for both boys and girls in the series and it includes a number of moral lessons.
